Consistent sleep (the same wake-up time, even weekends). 20 minutes of movement most days. Less caffeine and alcohol the week before. Calcium 1200 mg per day. Magnesium 300 to 400 mg per day (glycinate is gentlest). B6 50 to 100 mg per day. These have the most evidence.
Track to see your pattern
Two to three cycles of tracking your symptoms by cycle day reveals your personal pattern. You will see "day 22 is when I always cry at commercials" and stop blaming your relationship.
Is it PMS or PMDD?
PMS is uncomfortable. PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) wrecks your life. Severe depression, irritability, anxiety, even thoughts of self-harm in the week before your period, clearing within days of bleeding starting. PMDD is treatable with SSRIs (continuous or just luteal phase), continuous hormonal contraception, or CBT. You do not have to white-knuckle it.
What is not worth your money
Most PMS supplements at the drugstore. Many essential oil claims. "Hormone balancing" teas. Save it.

When does PMS start before period? +
Typically 7 to 10 days before. Some women feel it as early as ovulation (day 14ish in a 28-day cycle).
Does birth control help PMS? +
Combined hormonal contraception (especially continuous, skipping the placebo week) helps many women. Progestin-only methods sometimes worsen mood for sensitive folks.
Why do I cry over everything before my period? +
Estrogen drops sharply in the late luteal phase. Estrogen modulates serotonin. Less estrogen = less serotonin buffer = bigger emotional reactions. It is biology, not weakness.
