Is it normal to have mood swings before your period?
Mild to moderate mood shifts in the week before your period are normal and very common. Up to 75 percent of women experience them. But "common" is not the same as "you have to suffer through it." There is a real line between PMS and PMDD, and crossing it deserves treatment.

More emotional, easier to cry, easier to snap, somewhat anxious or down, all clearing within a few days of your period starting. Annoying but functional.
What is not just PMS
Losing functional days every month. Suicidal thoughts. Rage that scares you. Panic attacks. Relationship damage you regret. If symptoms make you not yourself for days each cycle and clear quickly after bleeding, that is PMDD territory.
When it is depression, not PMS
If symptoms do not clear within a few days of bleeding starting, or if they are constant with worsening before period, that is more likely depression than PMDD. Both are treatable - just by different teams.
Common questions
How many days before period do mood swings start? +
5 to 10 days for most women. Some feel them as early as ovulation (about 2 weeks before bleeding).
Can the pill cause mood swings? +
Some types worsen mood for sensitive women (especially low-estrogen / progestin-dominant). Others stabilize mood. It is individual - if mood worsened on a new pill, switch.
